Pingdroid 3.0 Just Released
The long overdue update to Pingdroid has just been released to the Android Market. It should be available for download sometime over the next few hours. We will be releasing quite a few new enhancements to Pingdroid in upcoming days so please forgive the updates but if you happen to have any feedback or suggestions, now is the time to send them our way.
Cliff
Hi – I can’t find this app. It’s August 30, maybe still too new? I assumed the selection in the Android Marketplace was the same for everyone, but maybe it’s not? I’m in Canada and can’t find other apps either (doesn’t help the website is unsearchable).
Thanks!
Thanks!
David
Um… PingDroid 3.0 is… um… well, the logo is pretty?
But even when it tells me I’ve made a “successful post,” it’s not connecting to Ping. It just displays the post there on my own phone, so I can network with myself in a happy introverted world of dysfunctional technology….
I’ve re-checked my Mobile Key to be sure I’m connected; an oddity that may be related is that the “Post Type” doesn’t seem to stick when I try to select one (i.e., no radio button turns green, though the pop-up goes away).
I’m using an HTC Hero, running Firmware 2.1-update 1.
Any ideas?
Pingdroid
Cliff, It does take a bit to distribute but you should have it by now. We are working on the website and will add the appropriate links to get to the app on the site but for now, try this Pingdroid in Android Market.
Pingdroid
Are you still having this problem? Can you post from the ping.fm website directly? And when you send a post from Pingdroid, do you see the post show up under Ping.fm’s recent posts link?
Daniel
I too, like David, is having problems. Pingdroid does not update. It will give a successful post confirmation but nothing. I can post on the Ping.fm website & update but not thru Pingdroid. I’m using a Motorola Droid. HELP!
Pingdroid
Daniel,
If it is giving you a successful post response then it is connecting and sending the post to Ping.fm. When you log into your ping.fm account, go to the “Recent Posts” section from the dashboard and see if your post shows up there. If it does, what services are listed under the post? Are they what you expected?
Daniel
The posts are not in the “recent posts” on ping.fm. :-/
Pingdroid
Daniel,
Can you tell me if you are using the Cyanogenmod build of Android?
David
Hi–sorry, thought I’d subscribed, but apparently hadn’t.
Exact same symptoms as Daniel. “Successful” message from PingDroid, but nothing shows up in the drawer.
How could I tell what “build” I’m using? (Brand noob Droid user here….) :-p
Pingdroid
Alright. We’ll figure out whats going on. A couple more questions:
Do you have wifi turned on?
And you are not seeing anything in Recent posts under your ping.fm account?
David, i’ll send you a link to a special version that you can use to help figure out what is going on. It might take a day or two since i’m traveling.

David
Hi Bryan–
Yes, wifi is turned on, and no, the only posts at http://ping.fm/recent/ are the ones I’ve posted from my laptop. None from PingDroid.
I’ll look for that link. Thanks for the help–I really hope we can get this working!
LOM Runner
Exactly same problem as David. But it was before I did the update. Every time I start pingdroid, a different symbol would pop up next to 3G. I can’t tell what it is… looks like the shape of a satellite… roaming? But I did this update, and it got rid of that. However I still can’t post anything. I have to use “happenings” until this is figured out. Motorola clic.
Oh… and I can’t launch the app via shortcut. (App not installed) errorr msg. I have to click on the “recently installed” notification to launch it.
David
Hi LOM Runner–
I suspect Bryan will be replying to you shortly, but though I did have all the same problems as you, Pingdroid is working fine for me now.
1. The satellite dish sounds like the GPS icon, at least on the HTC Hero–there’s a reference chart on p. 45 of the HTC Hero manual: http://www.htc.com/hero/m/files/guides/090720_Hero_HTC_English_UM.pdf I suspect PingDroid is just checking for geotagging purposes.
2. I had the same problem with the shortcut after the update. Try removing the shortcut icon from your home page, restarting the phone, then re-adding the shortcut icon. That worked for me.
3. Are you by any chance having difficulty sending picture messages also? I was, and called tech support about that. When we fixed that problem, PingDroid started working too….
Hope that helps.
David
Pingdroid
Thanks David! LOM runner, i’ve been working on troubleshooting version of Pingdroid that David actually helped me test.
I can send that to you if you want to get the details of what is going on with your Pingdroid but I suspect that like David the issues might be more than just Pingdroid.
For the app shortcut, thats an easy one. Simply remove the existing icon and create a new one. When we upgraded Pingdroid with this last version we removed the old icon and created a new one. Android doesn’t yet address this situation very well. As an app developer, I should have simply replaced the existing icon rather than create a whole new one.
To delete the icon, touch and hold your finger on the old icon for several seconds until a trash can appears and then drag the icon to the trash. This has to be done in one motion so once you touch the icon, don’t let up until you’ve actually dragged it to the trash. Then go to your apps screen and touch and hold the new Pingdroid icon for several seconds until your home screen appears. Then drop it where you want it to be. Let me know if you have any issues with this process.
Good luck!

I cannot send picture messages through ping Droid. text works fine. just got the HTC incredible so I believe I dl’ed v.3 right away.
Pingdroid
When you send picture messages what happens? Do you get a failed post notification?
sarah p
No, it says that it was successful, also when I go to ping.fms site and check my recent posts it does not show up there.
Pingdroid
Sarah,
Would you like to try some tests using our debug version of Pingdroid? That way I can help you troubleshoot a bit more…
sarah p
Sure, that sounds fine.
Josh
I’m about to get my new Epic 4G in the mail and anticipate downloading this app. This troubleshooting thread has been interesting. Can someone tell me if I download the app whether it will be working or if I’ll have to go through the same round-a-bout that these others have in getting it fully functional?
Pingdroid
Josh,
This page is very similar to the evening news. What you don’t see are the thousands of people (almost 7000 as of right now) that are actively using Pingdroid without issues. I recommend that you create a Ping.fm account first and make sure you have that configured correctly and are familiar with Ping.fm before you use Pingdroid to minimize your frustration. I can assure you that if you do have issues we will work with you to resolve them but keep in mind that Pingdroid is also a free product. So…what do you have to lose?
Brandon
I am having a similar issue as discussed in this thread. I get a message that says the post was successful, but it never shows up on any of my networks. I have checked ping.fm’s recent posts, and the posts have not showed up there. I am using an HTC EVO. Any help would be appreciated.
Corey Harris
i just downloaded this and having a few issues. Nothing I post is going to any of my sites. Kind if frustrating.
Pingdroid
Corey,
1) can you successfully post using a browser logged in to the ping.fm website?
2) when you post from pingdroid do you get a successful post notification?
3) if you answered ‘yes’ to #2, do you see your posts when you login to ping.fm?
Corey Harris
Yes, Yes, yes. My last post actually sent to facebook, and buzz, but not every where. I get an error when posting photo’s and it gives my location as london i think and the year says it’s 1969
daethian
Why doesn’t pingdroid auto capitalize and auto punctuate like every other app? I have zero other complaints about the app and this one is clearly minor.
Mark
I’m trying to post a picture to a FACEBOOK fan page. When I post a picture with pingdroid, It makes it to the ping.fm web site. I can see it from my desktop, but doesn’t post to my FACEBOOK page.
Pingdroid
If it is showing up in the ping.fm site then Pingdroid is working for you. It sounds like you need to troubleshoot your ping.fm settings for your facebook page. My advice would be to post your image from within the ping.fm website and tweak your FACEBOOK network settings and your associated page settings until you get it working the way you want. Then you will be able to post from Pingdroid with the same results. Please let use know how this goes and don’t hesitate to post more related questions here.
David
Hi
I’m having a problem with ver 3.0. I post a status update and it says its successful but it doesn’t show up on my social networks (facebook and twitter) for at least like an hour or so. I haven’t exactly timed it but im pretty sure the last post I tried was a good 2 or 3 hours. It never used to be like this.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Pingdroid
Hi David,
Once you get a success notification from Pingdroid that means your post has been handed off to Ping.fm. From time to time Ping.fm has issues with delayed posts. This is either an issue with ping.fm’s APIs or they are doing maintenance on the servers. You might follow @pingfm on twitter to keep up with issues and maintenance.
Hope this helps. Cheers!
Oli
Just updated to Pingdroid 3.0… What happened to the drop down to choose between posting groups? Really wishing I could roll back.
Pingdroid
Oli,
You can choose between posting groups. Select Menu->Post Type to select Status, Microblog or Blog. To select a specific trigger or network, select Menu->Triggers or Menu->Networks and then select the desired post type from the list.
But…you are not the first to ask for the convenient drop-down we had in the previous version. We will be adding this back so you can rest assured that will be back in the next update.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Brent W. Hopkins
I’m having problems with the app. Only text-based status updates -no title- go through (these go through immediately). Photos and blog posts don’t go through, even though a “successful” notification appears. I checked Ping.fm Recent Posts; nothing, even a day later.
Ping.fm is workining properly; it’s this app that isn’t working. EVO 4G with Android 2.2
Pingdroid
Brent,
Have blog posts and photos worked before? Is this a recent thing? Would you be willing to work with us to test a debug version of the app so we can troubleshoot your problem?
Logan
I have downloaded Pingdroid to manage a Facebook fan page. Solely posting text works for me, but when I try and attach a picture (either an existing one or by taking one) it does not work. It says “sending to ping.fm” but the recent posts do not show up on Ping and I do not receive any sort of notification. Any suggestions?
Logan
Update: I’m on an Evo and decided to adjust the size of the pics from 8MP to 5MP. This seemed to work for my personal page, but the pictures still do not work for the facebook fan page.
Pingdroid
Logan, When you post using the larger picture it takes substantially longer to upload the picture over your cell phone data connection. I assume it works using the ping.fm website…right?
Logan
The first few tries failed, but yes, the ping.fm website said that my last post was successful, but nothing has loaded on Facebook yet. Is there a recommended file size for optimum uploading speed?
Mike
It isnt excepting my mobile pin. Can anyone help?
Femke
I have the same problem as Mike! But I also can’t get my mobile pin. Help me please!
Anna
Just switched from Iphone to Droid. I can post text using Pingdroid but when I attach a photo, nothing posts. It says Pingdroid — Status Post at the top instead of Successful and nothing appears on my recent posts on the ping website. I didn’t have this trouble with the Ping apps for Iphone. Would love help. Thanks so much.
Pingdroid
Anna,
Photos can take a long time to post depending on your available bandwidth. You will get either a success or a failure notification once the post is complete. Do you have any more information on the issue? Have you succeeded at getting the images to post?
-bryanw
Pingdroid
Femke, Mike,
You can get your mobile key from the “Application Keys” link on the Ping.fm dashboard or using the http://m.ping.fm mobile site. The keys expire after 10 minutes so if you don’t use them quickly you will have to regenerate another one. Also, you will need an decent signal or a wifi connection since Pingdroid needs to validate your key with the Ping.fm server.

Would you be kind enough to publish a link to download the apk? I don’t have the Market app so I’m not able to get it there. Google code hosting is free and includes barcodes for apks automatically I believe…
Pingdroid
QR codes with links have been posted to this site at http://www.pingdroid.com/qr-codes-for-pingdroid/.
Callum
@Pingdroid: Great, thanks a lot. Does the pingdroid depend on any of the Google apps? When I try to install the apk I get “Application not installed” on my Nexus One running CyanogenMod 6.1 RC1. Any suggestions? Can I view a logfile somewhere? I’d be grateful for any suggestions, I’m stuck.
Pingdroid
It does depend on the Google version of the android library (specifically Google Maps) but I can build a version that does not rely on that. Especially if you’d be willing to test it for me.
Callum
Ok, just figured out how to use logcat and the terminal. I just created a topic on getsatisfaction:

Please try the new Cyanogen build using the link I posted here

Any luck fixing the problem where pics don’t post to fbpages? Again, like many people on here already said, it sends from pingdroid but nothing shows up in ping.fm nor my fb page. Thank you:)
